José Vieira holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and is Full Professor at the University of Minho, Portugal. His pedagogic activities in civil engineering have been taken at several universities: Minho and Coimbra (Portugal), Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and São Paulo (Brazil). Scientific areas of interest are: water resources management, drinking water safety planning, hydrodynamics and water quality in rivers, estuaries and coastal zones. He is author of more than 200 scientific publications in books, chapter of books, articles in peer review journals, and papers in national and international conferences
Some of former institutional activities of José Vieira include: The University of Minho, Portugal (Pro Rector and Vice Rector); the Portuguese Professional Association of Engineers (national Vice-President); the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education, A3ES (member of the Institutional Accreditation Committee); Ministry of Public Works and Transports (member of the Portuguese National Public Works Council); Ministry of Environment (member of the Portuguese National Water Council); Portuguese Council of Rectors (Coordinator of the University Planning Committee).
José Vieira is currently the President of FEANI (European Federation of National Engineering Associations) and a member of the Executive Council and chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of WFEO (World Federation of Engineering Organizations).
Theme: The European Civil Engineer - Opportunities & Employability
Aris Chatzidakis is the President of the European Council of Civil Engineers. He is a Civil Engineer, graduated, in 1974, from the National Technical University of Athens. During 1975-1976, he attended the post-graduate course (D.E.A.) “Aménagement du Territoire”, at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’ Hydraulique, at the University of Grenoble.
As an independent Civil Engineer he has been mainly involved in the structural design and the supervision of many private works, especially multi-storey housing and commercial buildings. He has been involved, as a structural and a geotechnical engineer, in many infrastructure projects such as bridges, road works of art and retaining walls, waste water sanitation installations and the design of dams. He has specialized in the structural analysis and design, for the restoration of traditional buildings and monuments.
He has been in the boards of various national and international organizations in the field of Civil Engineering and he is author of many articles regarding the history of constructions and civil engineers. He is co-author of the book “Notes on the history of civil engineering” that was recently published by the European Council of Civil Engineers.
Theme: The knowledge of a Civil Engineer
Klaus Thürriedl graduated in the field of Environmental Engineering and Water Management in 1985 and is active with his own Chartered Engineering Consultancy in the field of hydraulic engineering and water management as well as environmental engineering with 21 employees.
Since 2012 he was Secretary General of the European Council of Engineers Chambers (ECEC) and has been elected as President for the period 2019-2021. In his national chamber, he is holding the position of President of the Federal section of Engineering Consultants in Austria for the 3rd period, and is also Member of the Executive Board in the regional Chamber of Upper Austria/Salzburg. He is currently President of the Austrian Consultants Association (ACA) for the 2nd period.
Due to his active involvement in several regional, national and European engineering organisations he is extremely well cross-linked with a multitude of relevant stakeholders and organisations in the field of the engineering professions in Europe. He has a profound practical and knowledge of the important aspects of the engineering professions and a throughout understanding of the national professional recognition processes for engineers.
